Go Green and Save Money

There are many examples of how going green saves you money. In fact, aside from care of our environment, saving money is another top choice on why millions of people around the world is going green. If you save your consumption of electricity, water and gas and decrease buying things that you don’t really need you’ll be able to save half of your money in a year.

Take a look at this example. A study shows that if all offices in the United States do this simple thing of shutting down their computers every lunch time, they will save enough energy that can power the whole Empire State Building for the whole year. Do you have any idea of how much one of the tallest buildings in the world pay for a year of electricity? Hundreds of thousands of dollars. Imagine these among of savings with the simple act of shutting down the computers for an hour.

Examples of Going Green and Saving Money at the Same Time

Here are some examples of how going green saves you money. Conserving on water consumption will save us on our water bills. As simple as that. It may not amount to anything if you study your monthly bill but over years the savings that you get from low water bills can add up to thousands.

Gas is one of the top expenses of families around the world today. By taking more walks or using alternative sources of fuel, a family can save almost half of their household expenses for gas. You can easily compute how much you can save if your parents don’t gas up everyday for their cars. They can use electric cars or they can arrange for a car pool.

These are some examples on how going green can save you money. There are many other examples that I’m sure you can think of. Going green is important because our world is becoming a harsh environment for all of us and one of the best ways to encourage people to take up the cause is to tell them that they will save a lot when they do.

Below you will find effects of global warming on hurricane pictures. Global warming causes significant changes in sea temperatures which in turn cause changes in the strength and breadth of formed hurricanes. Scientists studying hurricanes say that the hurricanes that visited key cities are much stronger in the last 5 years. They attribute this phenomenon with global warming.

Even if the collapse will not cause sea level rise, this phenomenon just goes to show that global warming is real and that the ice in Antartica and Arctic area will collapse if global warming continues.

The Wilkins Ice Shelf has just collapsed a few days ago. Will we wait for the collapse of bigger chunks of icebergs in the North and South pole before we wake up to the fact that global warming has the potential to raise our sea levels and turn our planet into a sea world.

Some say the world with end in fire, some say in ice. . . that’s a line from a famous Robert Frost poem. He wrote in more than 30 years ago but with now that global warming has hit our world, the lines seem to describe exactly what people are debating today.
Many scientists, government officials, environmentalists say that at the rate that we are emitting carbon dioxide though burning of fuels, we will have an unbearably hot world by 2050. The ice in the North pole will melt and the amount of water in our oceans will increase tremendously and we will all be burried under water.

Late last year, some scientists spoke up and told us that it’s actually the opposite that’s happening. Our earth is not getting hotter. It is actually on the way to another ice age. They say that if we notice, our winters have become colder. Records have shown that during January and February, several cities in North America, Europe and even Asia experienced the coldest climate since 200 years ago. They also notice that the ice sheet in the Artic pole is becoming thicker.

Sometimes it’s hard who to believe. It is true that we experienced the coldest climate this year. Even parts of the Middle East experienced snow which was the first time they experienced it. Our earth is becoming weird and weird as time goes by. Will it end in fire or ice? I hope neither. I hope our planet continues to support human life for our children. Is global warming real? Honestly, people are getting confused. Can an authority guide us and can we stop this global warming debate and just tell us the real score.

The go green movement is spreading like wild fire and it has now reached the consciousness of ordinary people including young kids. Going green is the only to fight global warming and other environmental problems and ensure that earth will still be a livable planet 50 years from now. Going green doesn’t necessarily mean doing big things like lobbying for greener policies. Although we also need that, as ordinary citizens, we can also help in greening our world.

Whoever you are, whether you’re a student, a mother, a young professional or a businessman, there are 5 simple ways to go green that you can do today and resovle to do everyday. If all of us do these 5 things on the list, we’ll be able to conserve enough energy and money to power our homes for 1 year.

Segregate Waste. Although waste segregation has been mandated for years now, studies show that only 30% of American households do this. It’s is as easy as having 2 bins– one for recyclable waste and another for non-biodegradable waste. All you need to do everyday is to put your trash at the designatted waste bin at home. It’s easy and all of us can do that. Let’s make that 30% go up to 100%.

Unplug appliances. When you are not using any appliances, unplug them. Unplugging appliances will only take you a few seconds but when all of us do this, we’ll save enough energy to cover our electricity bill for a day. When we leave our appliances plugged, the motor still uses energy even if they’re turned off. So when you’re not using your microwave oven, unplug it. Don’t let the digital clock continue to run. Unplug it.

Turn off faucet while brushing your teeth. One second of leaving the faucet open is 1 litter of wasted water. How many times do you brush your teeth everyday? How many times do you brush your teeth every week, every month, every year? How many liters of water will that be if you always brush with the water continue on running from the faucet. If all of us turn off faucet while brushing our teeth, we’ll be able to save billions of liters of waste every year.

Use the public transportation. Working people who bring their cars everyday to work give out billions of carbon dioxide into the air. They also use millions of tons of gas every year. Using the public transport once in a week will give them huge savings that will make them buy a new electronic car in 5 years. It will also help lessen air pollution.

Spend quality time with family. Children spend a lot of time on TV and computer these days. Cutting the time children spent with these media and talking with them, playing with them, walking the dog with them or enjoying the sun at the park with them will decrease the over-all use of coal to power our homes with electricity to power our TV and computers. Let your kids play outside or tell them stories. You are not only going green; you are also developing good relatioship with your children.

These are 5 of the easiest ways to go green. You don’t have spend any dime to help save the world. If all of us will do all these 5 things in the list, even if they’re little steps, they will add up and the result is a greener and safer world for our children and the children of our children and so forth.

It’s just one of the things that we don’t think about. We throw it out of our homes, wherever it lands has nothing to do with us. Our e-waste or the old computers, mobile phones, telephones, laptops, and other gadgets that we threw away for more modern and updated models. Can you still remember where you disposed them? Do you care where they are now? Most probably they are in China, African or some other developing countries that Western countries use as dump sites of their e-waste.

It may have been dumped in China where recycling e-waste is the main preoccupation of a village called Guiyo. In this village, all people break down the parts of electronic gadgets and pick pieces that can be of used or recycled. They burn the computers to get the gold and other metals that they can sell to local businesses that have need for these metals.
The old computer desktops may have been dumped in this village in South Africa where majority of children and new-born have been discovered to be having lead content in their blood that is way way out of the ordinary and normal.

Even though there is already an international agreement against the dumping of e-waste to developing countries from the developed countries in the late 90’s, it is still done until today. People from the developing countries accept the e-waste of rich countries because recycling e-waste affords them a more comfortable life than being peasants, farmers or fishermen.

But since they are doing it illegally, their health and the environment are taking the toll. The waters near the neighborhoods where they do the recycling are discovered to be very acidic that when they throw coins into it, the coins melt. The burning of the electronic gadget produce toxic levels of air pollution in the area.

Large manufacturers of laptops, desktop computers, mobile phones and other electronic gadgets should do something about this. They are the ones who made them, isn’t it just right that they are the ones to be responsible for the e-waste that they brought?
