The go green movement is spreading like wild fire and it has now reached the consciousness of ordinary people including young kids. Going green is the only to fight global warming and other environmental problems and ensure that earth will still be a livable planet 50 years from now. Going green doesn’t necessarily mean doing big things like lobbying for greener policies. Although we also need that, as ordinary citizens, we can also help in greening our world.
Whoever you are, whether you’re a student, a mother, a young professional or a businessman, there are 5 simple ways to go green that you can do today and resovle to do everyday. If all of us do these 5 things on the list, we’ll be able to conserve enough energy and money to power our homes for 1 year.

Segregate Waste. Although waste segregation has been mandated for years now, studies show that only 30% of American households do this. It’s is as easy as having 2 bins– one for recyclable waste and another for non-biodegradable waste. All you need to do everyday is to put your trash at the designatted waste bin at home. It’s easy and all of us can do that. Let’s make that 30% go up to 100%.
Unplug appliances. When you are not using any appliances, unplug them. Unplugging appliances will only take you a few seconds but when all of us do this, we’ll save enough energy to cover our electricity bill for a day. When we leave our appliances plugged, the motor still uses energy even if they’re turned off. So when you’re not using your microwave oven, unplug it. Don’t let the digital clock continue to run. Unplug it.
Turn off faucet while brushing your teeth. One second of leaving the faucet open is 1 litter of wasted water. How many times do you brush your teeth everyday? How many times do you brush your teeth every week, every month, every year? How many liters of water will that be if you always brush with the water continue on running from the faucet. If all of us turn off faucet while brushing our teeth, we’ll be able to save billions of liters of waste every year.
Use the public transportation. Working people who bring their cars everyday to work give out billions of carbon dioxide into the air. They also use millions of tons of gas every year. Using the public transport once in a week will give them huge savings that will make them buy a new electronic car in 5 years. It will also help lessen air pollution.
Spend quality time with family. Children spend a lot of time on TV and computer these days. Cutting the time children spent with these media and talking with them, playing with them, walking the dog with them or enjoying the sun at the park with them will decrease the over-all use of coal to power our homes with electricity to power our TV and computers. Let your kids play outside or tell them stories. You are not only going green; you are also developing good relatioship with your children.
These are 5 of the easiest ways to go green. You don’t have spend any dime to help save the world. If all of us will do all these 5 things in the list, even if they’re little steps, they will add up and the result is a greener and safer world for our children and the children of our children and so forth.
